Road to Certification

What does it really take to become CERTIFIED ORGANIC?

Out of over 9,000 farms in the Garden State, fewer than 75 are certified organic! Many farmers in New Jersey have chosen not to pursue certification because of the expected cost, the paperwork involved, and the amount of time it takes.

Would you be surprised to know that you can be reimbursed up to 75% of your certification costs by the NOP’s Cost Share Program, and many organic management practices can be partially funded through programs like EQIP?

Or that much of the application paperwork consists of records you probably already keep?

How about the fact that, if you haven’t applied any prohibited products to your fields for the last three years, you may be certified in a matter of months?

Road To Certification is designed to provide you with the information you need to prepare yourself and your farm operation for organic certification. Instructor Mark Keating, NOFA-NJ’s Organic Services Specialist, will walk you through the process in this day-long course on Saturday, May 7. Guest speakers include Diane Skoss, owner of Windsong Farm in Warren and former NOFA-NJ Journeyperson, Al Johnson, Organic Inspector and NOFA-NJ Board Member, and Josh Schreck, Field Manager at Lima Family Farms in Hillsborough.

It is important to note that this course will not teach you how to farm and will not guarantee successful certification.
